Whilst the summer has seen our Junior teams have a well-earned break, Lions head of coaching Tony Gold has been busy preparing a crack coaching team for the new season
After his first full season in charge, Gold has identified improvements and feels confident that we have the best coaching team Lions Junior section has ever had.
Gold explained ‘Firstly, I wanted to ensure coaches understood that we needed a commitment to our club and what we are trying to achieve’.
‘The facilities can’t be beaten, so this has helped show we mean business as a club’.
‘We want to make each kid better. We also want to identify talent and bring them through the year groups and into the first team. This is already happening with a number of Under 18 players already making appearances with the first team in the Herts Senior County League’.
First team coaches Darren Yarlett and former Spurs player Steve Grenfell will be part of the Junior coaching set up, providing a direct link and enabling them to spot young talent in the ranks as well as share their vast experience. First team player Charlie Kasler will also join the junior coaching staff.
Luton Town academy coach Andy Zeller returns, along with hand-picked new coaches like Lorenc Dedja, who comes with a great reputation.
Goalkeeper coaching will go to a new level with the addition of former Albanian Under-20 international, and Lions player, Mario Cenolli running specialist sessions each Wednesday.
‘Players and parents will see a real difference and it’s up to the boys to put in the effort to improve as they have some great people to learn from. We want to keep getting better as a club and the building blocks are being added each year’.
Gold was looking beyond Lions with his ambition for stand-out boys: ‘We shouldn’t be shy in pushing our better boys to go for professional club academies. It would be great for us if Jewish kids saw they can progress to a higher level via Lions.’
‘Last season saw Lions teams play matches against – and beat – the likes of Barnet and Stevenage; and I’d like to see more of this and hope one or two can impress the pros’.
Training starts w/c 1st September – matches for older age groups from 6th September. A weekly Junior news round-up will again appear on the website once the action starts – Good luck to all our teams and enjoy the season!
