Not to be out-done by Chigwell winning the Masters league and cup double on Sunday, Maccabi London Lions completed their own double this evening as goals from Danny Schindler (2) and Marc Morris earned them a 3-1 win over St John’s Wood Tigers in the Maccabi Masters Football League Division 2 Cup.
Nevertheless the final proved to be a closer affair than many had predicted, and it was Tigers who drew first blood, after Lions defender Barnett Horwitz was adjudged to have handled in the area after just 12 minutes. The spot-kick was duly dispatched by Oren Wolf and it was a lead Tigers maintained to the interval.
After the break, with Marc Morris coming off the bench to add strength to the Lions attack, the tide began to turn, and it was no surprise when Danny Schindler fired home the equaliser.
Tigers continued to enjoy more than their fair share of possession, but lacked any real penetration, and they were eventually worn down by Lions, who took the lead through Schindler’s second, a close-range header.
The last word, inevitably, went to Marc Morris, without whose goals no Lions victory would be complete. Nodding in another close-range header, it was the end for Tigers, who resigned themselves to the runners-up medals. But it was also the end for Lions, albeit of a hugely successful season, during which they won every single game in both league and this cup, making them truly invincible once again, and reinforcing their position as kings of the jungle.
