London Lions will be well represented within Team GB next week as the 20th Maccabiah Games gets underway in Israel on 4th July until the 18th.
The event which takes place every four years is one of the largest sporting events in the world in terms of competitors and sports, with over 10,000 athletes across a range of events and drawing entries from the very best in Jewish sport from over 70 nations.
Under 18 footballer and Lions starlet Jack Mattey also has the honour of being one of three GB flag bearers at the opening ceremony in the Teddy Stadium, Jerusalem, where 40,000 people are expected to be cheering on the athletes.
The men’s football team – who will be based in Jerusalem – is trying to upset the odds and win Great Britain’s first gold medal since 1961 with Lions’ Andy Landesberg and Nathan Kosky at the helm. The squad also includes a significant number of our first team within the 20-man playing squad; Adam Burchell, Harry Hatchwell, Charlie Kasler, Josh Kennet, Max Kyte, Nick Landesberg, Adam Lipman, Austin Lipman, Jordan Marks, David Myers, Jake Rinsler, Zac Rose, and Charlie Rubin.
Lions are also well represented within both Under 16 and Under 18 Junior football squads who will compete in Haifa, as well as Masters at Over 35 and Over 45 categories with Lions management also in place in the shape of Dan Jacobs and Elan Ovits (Over 35s) plus Andrew Myers and Dan Reuben (Over 45s).
Whilst there is no Open futsal team this time, Junior sides have Lions representation in the small sided game.
With the standard expected to be high as ever at both football and futsal, we wish all the boys good luck and hope they come back with some medals!
