Lions players and managers were a key part of the Great Britain open football squad who clinched an historic silver medal at the 20th Maccabiah Games in Israel.
With the squad managed by Lions’ Andy Landesberg and Nathan Kosky, thirteen current Lions players made up the bulk of the 2o-man squad who claimed GB’s third medal at football in 56 years and were edged out from a famous gold by USA in the final.
Their demanding schedule saw them go unbeaten until the final match, which was televised live on Israeli national TV, and played at a full University stadium under lights.
Assistant Manager Nathan Kosky said: ‘Anyone that knows the Maccabiah understands how difficult it is to win a medal in the Open Football tournament; there is a high standard of opponent in every single game, the hot conditions, the relentless schedule, with tournament football leaving no margin for error. The whole squad gave a truly fantastic effort in making it all the way through to the final. It was an incredible experience for everyone involved and there is now the desire from everyone to get back there in 2021 and win gold’.
After completing a tough pre-tournament training regime at Rowley Lane, the boys did London Lions proud and we hope others at the club can emulate and win medals for GB in the future.
