As of next season Maccabi London Lions will be appointed as an official Referees Development Centre by the Herts FA, which will see budding referees now take charge of all younger age group games at Rowley Lane each Sunday.
Driven by Nigel Burns, our Director of Youth Football and qualified referee himself, young referees who wish to develop themselves before they can apply for promotion (at age 16), will get the chance to referee Lions younger age groups every Sunday before they apply to join the Hertfordshire FA’s Referee Academy .
These referees will be allocated to all Lions games without a Watford Friendly League appointed referee. This will have the effect of Lions Juniors no longer requiring volunteer parents to take the responsibility of refereeing.
Nigel said: “This is a great way for young refs to develop their refereeing skills in a controlled environment, and also relieves parents of having to do a job they are not qualified and sometimes not comfortable doing”.
Harvesters and Berkhamstead Raiders are the other two centre’s in Herts, so this is another fantastic and positive step forward for the club, a gold star for our Charter Standard Status, as well as being looked on very favourably at the Herts FA.
News Update: Following further conversations, up until the end of the season we are looking at getting most of our Junior games on Sunday afternoons refereed by the “boys in black”.
